Apex International explores value of anilox cleaning

The experts at Apex International explain how this pressroom function is much more than a task that gets completed during a shutdown and checked off a list.

When printers think about anilox cleaning, it’s often viewed as routine maintenance. A task that gets completed during a shutdown and checked off the list. In reality, anilox cleaning is much more than that.

It is a highly technical process that directly impacts ink transfer, print density, color consistency, and overall press efficiency. When cleaning is ineffective, contamination remains trapped inside the cells, leading to reduced cell volume, inconsistent print results, increased waste, and, in some cases, premature roll replacement.

The difference between a roll that simply looks clean and one that is truly clean can have a significant impact on press performance and profitability.

Surface clean vs. deep clean

Many conventional cleaning methods remove only the contamination visible on the surface of the anilox roll. While the roll may appear cleaner to the eye, dried ink, coatings, and debris often remain compacted deep within the cells.

This type of surface cleaning may improve appearance, but it rarely restores performance. True deep cleaning removes contamination throughout the entire depth of the engraved cells, restoring effective volume and allowing the anilox to release ink predictably and consistently.

This becomes increasingly important with high line-count anilox rolls, where even minor blockages can significantly affect ink transfer and print quality.

Protecting the engraving

Anilox rolls are precision-engineered components. Every cell is laser engraved with a specific geometry, including:

  • Cell depth
  • Cell opening
  • Wall structure
  • Engraving angle

These characteristics are carefully designed to deliver a defined ink volume, typically measured in BCM/in² or cm³/m². Because of this precision, cleaning methods must be carefully controlled.

Aggressive or improper cleaning techniques can cause permanent damage, including:

  • Mechanical damage to cell walls
  • Micro-fracturing or rounding of cell edges
  • Loss of engraved volume
  • Surface roughness changes that affect ink release

The goal of cleaning is not simply to remove contamination. It is to remove contamination while preserving the integrity of the ceramic surface and the original engraving geometry.

Repeatability and process control

Effective anilox cleaning should never be a reactive process performed only when print quality deteriorates. Instead, it should be a controlled, repeatable process with standardized procedures.

Key variables that influence cleaning effectiveness include:

  • Chemistry concentration
  • Dwell time
  • Cleaning temperature
  • Mechanical action

By controlling these factors, printers can achieve consistent cleaning results regardless of press type, ink system, or contamination level.

A repeatable cleaning process leads to:

  • More consistent print quality
  • Reduced setup times
  • Improved color stability
  • Longer anilox life
  • Lower operating costs

Measurement and verification

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding anilox cleaning is that cleanliness can be determined visually. It cannot.

True cleaning is measurable. Several techniques can be used to verify cleaning effectiveness, including: cell volume measurement; 3D surface topography analysis; microscopic inspection; and ink transfer performance testing.

Difference between clean and truly clean

A clean anilox roll is not defined by how it looks.

It is defined by:

  • Restored cell volume
  • Consistent ink transfer
  • Predictable print performance
  • Protection of the engraving
  • Repeatable production results

When cleaning is approached as a technical process rather than a maintenance task, printers can maximize anilox performance, improve press efficiency, and extend roll life. True anilox cleaning doesn’t just improve appearance. It restores performance.
